How long can I take prednisolone tablets before it effects me in a bad way?

I have emphysema and I find that when I take prednisolone tablets my breathing becomes a little easier and I feel and eat better (my appetite is poor). I don’t know why this happens, but my doctor says that its not a good idea to continue to take them. How many mg can I safely take and for how long until it starts to damage me.
